පසුව පෞද්ගලික හේතුවක් මත යැයි කියමින් 2015 වසරේ ජූලි මස රූපවාහිනි සංස්ථාවේ සභාපති ධූරයෙන් ඔහු ඉල්ලා අස්වූ අතර 2016 වසරේ අගෝස්තු මස වාරියපොළ පැවැති එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂ රැළියේදී එම වේදිකාවට ගොඩවෙමින් රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ මහතාට සහය පලකලේය.
නමුත් 2017 වසරේදී වෙබ් අඩවියකට සම්මුඛ සාකච්ඡාවක් ලබාදෙමින් සෝමරත්න දිසානායක මහතා පවසා සිටියේ මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ පාලන සමය මෙන්ම වත්මන් ආණ්ඩුවේද වෙනසක් නැති බවත් බලාපොරොත්තු වෙන දේශපාලන සංස්කෘතියක් මේ රටේ සෑදිය නොහැකි බවත්ය.
